Steps to maintaining a High Speed Wireless Connection

  1. Reputable Internet Service Provider.

  2. Use a  dependable wireless router such as: Netgear, Linksys, Belkin, Motorola, or D-Link.

  3. Good computer, purchased in the last 5 years (not earlier) with at least 2 gigabytes of RAM and a Processor (CPU) of 1.8GHz or higher.

  4. Range Extender or Wi-Fi Smart Repeater to extend the range of your wireless signal and keep it from dropping.

Configure a Wireless Router for a Laptop

  1. Connect an Ethernet cable between the DSL or cable modem to the WAN port on the back of the wireless router. If the DSL or cable modem is not wired, then connect a phone line (for DSL) or coaxial cable (for cable) from the wall jack to the modem.

  2. Connect an Ethernet cable between the laptop to one of the four LAN ports on the back of the wireless router.

  3. Open a web browser and go to the address for the router's web interface. Refer to the router's user manual for the specific address, but it will be similar to "192.168.X.X."

  4. Log in using the login information from the router manual. Login info may differ but in most cases the user name is "admin" and the password is "password."

  5. Click on "Wireless," then change the Network Name (SSID) to your desired network name.

  6. Click on "Wireless Security" and select the wireless security type, then enter the Wireless Security Key. Save the settings and exit the router utility.

Another way to set up a Wireless Router

  1. Click the "Start" menu on the laptop's home screen and select "Control Panel."

  2. Click on "Network and Internet." A new window will open.

  3. Select "Connect to a network" under "Network and Sharing Center." A new window will appear.

  4. Click the "Refresh" button on the right side of the window. A list of available wireless networks will appear.

  5. Click on a wireless network to select it. Click the "Connect" button at the bottom of the window. Click on the icon of your web browser of choice. You now have wirelessly hooked up the Internet to a Toshiba laptop.
